Hamburger SV suffered its second home defeat in the 2nd Bundesliga and thus another setback in the promotion race. The North Germans, who had previously won twice, lost 3:4 (2:2) to Karlsruher SC, who had been undefeated in seven games, on Sunday and fell back to fourth place with 34 points. The hosts were able to equalize a 0:2 and 2:3 deficit, but had to accept the KSC winning goal from Marvin Wanitzek.

SpVgg Greuther Fürth, who have been undefeated in eight games, are now second in the table after their 2-1 win in the top game against Holstein Kiel. The “cloverleaf” is now tied on points ahead of third-placed Kiel (both 35). Meanwhile, Eintracht Braunschweig is the team of the moment in the bottom of the table and celebrated its fourth win in a row with a 1-0 (1-0) win against 1. FC Magdeburg.

Defensively overwhelmed HSV loses 3:4 against Karlsruher SC

HSV suffered a defeat against KSC in a wild game and slipped out of the promotion ranks – against Baden it was their first home defeat since September 1992. Coach Tim Walter’s team lost 3-4 in front of 51,776 fans at the Volksparkstadion (2 :2). Igor Matanovic (3rd minute, 5th), Budu Zivzivadze (46th) and Marvin Wanitzek (81st) scored for KSC, Bakery Jatta (33rd), Lászlo Bénes (35th) and Robert Glatzel (62nd) scored for the Hamburg goals.

Due to the second home defeat, HSV slipped from third to fourth place and is now five points behind city rivals and league leaders FC St. Pauli. The Karlsruhe team are unbeaten for the eighth game in a row. Karlsruhe started forward with determination. Former St. Pauli striker Matanovic scored twice within a short space of time. The game was accompanied by renewed protests against the German Football League’s investor plans. In the twelfth minute, tennis balls flew onto the field from Hamburg’s North Curve. The game was briefly interrupted.

With the support of the audience, HSV then found its way into the game and responded. Jatta scored after an assist from Bénes, who shortly afterwards made it 2-2 after a counterattack. Immediately after the break, Karlsruhe’s Zivzivadze prevailed against the now weak central defenders Stephan Ambrosius and Guilherme Ramos and gave KSC the lead again. Glatzel scored to equalize again. When Hamburg were pushing for victory, Wanitzek struck after a counterattack and brought the guests success. After that, HSV couldn’t find any more means, and KSC could definitely have increased it.

1-0 against Magdeburg: Braunschweig achieves its fourth win in a row

Eintracht Braunschweig has continued its winning streak in the relegation battle. Table 16. won 1-0 (1-0) against 1. FC Magdeburg and celebrated their fourth success in a row. In the table, coach Daniel Scherning’s team is now level on points with their next opponent, Schalke 04, and has also come within three points of Magdeburg.

In front of 22,582 fans, Ermin Bicakcic scored from the crowd in the 16th minute to give Braunschweig the lead. After a near-own goal from Amara Condé (5th) and a good header chance from Rayan Philippe (6th), Eintracht could have led higher even at this early stage.

Magdeburg had more possession of the ball from the start, but only adjusted better to Braunschweig’s transition game after 25 minutes. Shortly before the break they were unlucky that the referee did not award a penalty for the FCM after a foul on Baris Atik (45th + 2).

In the second half of an intense and sometimes hard-fought game, the Magdeburgers were no longer able to put Eintracht under sustained pressure. Braunschweig again had the better chances thanks to Thórir Jóhann Helgason (50th) and Johan Gomez (83rd). Magdeburg’s Daniel Elfadli was shown a yellow-red card in the 74th minute.

Now 2nd place: Greuther Fürth wins the top game against Holstein Kiel

SpVgg Greuther Fürth has caused Holstein Kiel the next setback in the promotion race and is now itself the first pursuer of leaders FC St. Pauli. Coach Alexander Zorniger’s team won the top game, which was worth seeing, 2-1 (0-0) and climbed to second place in the table. Third are the Kiel team with the same points, who started the second half of the season disappointingly with two defeats.

Armindo Sieb scored for Fürth in the 59th minute with a direct shot from 17 meters and captain Branimir Hrgota (75th). Patrick Erras (64th) managed to equalize with a header in front of 11,008 fans. Tom Rothe (67th) and Finn Porath (71st) failed at the post for the unfortunate Kiel team.

In the long, evenly balanced first 45 minutes, the Franconians gained an advantage in the final phase. The first goal chance of the game in the 35th minute was tough. Hrgota took a shot from the edge of the penalty area, but goalkeeper Timon Weiner directed the wonderful shot over the crossbar. Just a minute later, the Kiel keeper saved from Julian Green’s header from close range.

After a counterattack, striker Shuto Machino (41′) appeared completely free in front of Fürth’s goalkeeper Jonas Urbig, but shot meters over the goal. Another switch put Rothe (45th+1) in a promising position, but Simon Asta blocked the shot in time.

After the change, the spectators saw even more goal area scenes. What was particularly worth seeing was how Hrgota took an arc lamp directly from the edge of the penalty area and used it to score Fürth’s tenth win of the season.
