Lost two points, but defended the lead in the 2nd Bundesliga – thanks to Robert Glatzel, Hamburger SV stays on top. More was definitely possible for 1. FC Kaiserslautern than the draw, but that also applied to HSV on Sunday evening (October 8th, 2022).
In the end, the 1:1 (1:0) went perfectly fine. Hamburg started the game with great dominance, after 15 minutes the home team had 81 percent of the ball. The Lauterers had the first big chance: Terrence Boyd headed wide of the HSV goal in the 22nd minute.
Luthe slips up when conceding a goal
Then the otherwise reliable FCK keeper helped the Hamburgers: Andreas Luthe let a flick from Sonny Kittel rebound and hit Robert Glatzel’s knee with his attempt to clear – he couldn’t defend himself against his seventh goal of the season (24th).
But the Lauterer remained an extremely uncomfortable and dangerous guest, especially in the person of Boyd. The Hamburg defense never got the ex-Leipziger under control, but the beefy center forward missed too many opportunities. His neighbor Kenny Redondo was also a constant source of trouble, but had the same problem as Boyd – the last consequence was missing in the end.
Raab saves in the fog
Curious thing shortly after the restart: Because the Lauterer curve flared pyros, the stadium was immersed in dense fog – but referee Robert Hartmann initially allowed the game to continue. Another huge chance from Boyd, who stormed towards Matheo Raab alone after a mistake by Heyer, was hardly recognizable, but the Hamburg keeper saved with a spectacular foot reflex. By the way, Hartmann probably didn’t give the corner kick due due to a lack of sight – but then interrupted for a few minutes until the fog cleared a bit.
Again Redondo had the equalizer on his feet shortly afterwards, but shot just wide of the left angle after a solo. Luthe then showed himself to be well recovered from his mistake in the 0:1 and made strong saves against Glatzel in the 70th and 77th minutes.
Kittel awards the match point
And Luthe even became the savior of the draw. In the 80th minute, HSV got a match point after video evidence: Ludovit Reis was clearly fouled by Robin Bormuth in the penalty area, but Hartmann did not whistle at first. Thanks to VAR, the penalty was awarded after all, but Sonny Kittel was saved by the Lauter goalkeeper who made a spectacular save.
In direct return, the compensation fell. Redondo was once again too fast for the Hamburg defense on the left, his cross put FCK joker Lex-Tyger Lobinger into the far corner to make it 1-1. And the post continued: Both teams tried to score the winning goal until the seventh minute of stoppage time, but the lucky punch neither Lautern nor HSV succeeded.
