15 percent more fare dodgers on Berlin’s buses and trains

BVG passengers are always wondering: Why are only vaccination status and masks checked and not the tickets as well? Or vice versa only tickets without 3G status?

“We separated that,” says BVG boss Eva Kreienkamp (59). “Card checks are about speed between two stops – otherwise we wouldn’t be able to get through. 3G checks are priority operations in which regulatory agencies and the police are also involved.”

Left-wing MP Sebastian Schlüsselburg (38) now asked how many fare dodgers were caught in the past pandemic year.

Subway: 6,882,752 passengers were checked. +++ 286,598 fare dodgers were caught – 15 percent more than in 2020 +++ There were 3,235 criminal charges against repeat offenders (from three violations).

Train: In 2021, 9.3 million ticket checks were carried out. +++ 302,000 dodgers, corresponds to 3.2 percent (2020: 3.1) +++ 11,319 criminal charges.

There were 2,452 charges and 1,616 convictions in the previous year. In the JVA Tegel sat 26 fare dodgers (they did not pay the fine), in Moabit 42, in Plötzensee 238, in the JVA for women 39 fare dodgers.
