Monte Carlo (AP) – Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev has to wait for the first final at the ATP tournament in Monte Carlo.
The 24-year-old, the best German tennis player, lost to the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas in his adopted country 4: 6, 2: 6 and has not yet won a tournament this year.
After the quarter-final win against Jannik Sinner from Italy, which took more than three hours, Zverev had to admit defeat after just 75 minutes and was unable to repeat the strong performance of the previous day. On Friday, the third in the world rankings was treated for complaints on the right thigh and was not at the peak of his strength against Tsitsipas. In the semi-finals of the French Open 2021, Zverev lost to the fifth in the world rankings on sand.
After the top seeded Novak Djokovic left early, Zverev was the highest-ranked professional in the Masters 1000 tournament, which was worth around 5.2 million euros. In the final, Tsitsipas will now meet the Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, who won 6: 4, 6: 7 (2: 7), 6: 3 against Grigor Dimitrov from Bulgaria, who was also unseeded.
