Zverev about coach Bruguera: Get along very well

Madrid (AP) – Olympic tennis champion Alexander Zverev has praised the cooperation with coach Sergi Bruguera.

“We tried it in Miami and it worked well. We get along very well on the pitch. Hopefully it will be a successful relationship,” said the third in the world rankings before the start of the tournament in Madrid.

Zverev first worked with the former world-class clay court player from Spain at the Masters in Miami in March. He hopes this will last for a long time. “I’ve been without a real coach for six or seven months since my father had to take care of other things,” said Zverev on Sunday.

In the past, the 25-year-old had stated that his father “due to health reasons” could not be there. The “Bild am Sonntag” recently reported that Zverev’s father would return as a coach in Madrid or afterwards at the tournament in Rome.

“I need a coach. I need leadership. I need someone to look at what’s happening on the tennis court,” said Zverev. “I think Sergi is one of the best guys for that.” Bruguera, who won the French Open twice in his career, was recommended to him by his former coach David Ferrer.

In Munich, Zverev had already failed in the round of 16 and is still waiting for his first tournament win this season. At the Masters tournament in Madrid, Zverev is the defending champion, placed second and has a bye in the first round.
