Through a announcement on its blog, Zoom revealed that it had acquired certain technologies from Liminal, a start-up specializing in the production and distribution of content. The provider of online meeting and video services is thus strengthening its Events offer dedicated to the organization of online events. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.
Zoom strengthens its Events offer with Liminal
With results that have exploded thanks to the pandemic and the needs of companies for videoconferencing tools, the company Zoom wishes to continue to develop its offer. It has just acquired certain Luminal assets to strengthen its service dedicated to the organization of virtual events. Zoom must assert itself in the face of rather tough competition. The purchase of OSC, ISO and Streamweaver tools will allow it to take a new step forward.

The technology of the start-up, in particular the ZoomOSC and ZoomISO add-ons based on Zoom technology, make it possible to organize professional virtual events. The ZoomOSC add-on enhances business meetings and events through the Open Sound Control protocol which enables the integration of Zoom sessions into many third-party software and hardware workflows. The ZoomISO add-on, on the other hand, allows the video stream of each participant to be exported as a separate output to professional production equipment. This is possible for a total of five participant video streams in 1080p and unlimited in 360p.
Two of Liminal’s co-founders, Andy Carluccio and Jonathan Kokotajlo, are also joining the Zoom teams in January. They will respond to Zoom’s CTO, Brendan Ittleson, and Zoom’s Event Services Manager, Sam Kokajko.
Develop professional services
Thanks to these tools, Zoom claims to be able to bridge the gap between tools for controlling emerging and traditional events. This will help broadcast studios, theaters and other venues to deliver more professional streams. These tools should also allow Zoom to extend its Events feature to create event centers, sell tickets and create multiple live broadcast sessions.
Zoom spokesperson Candace Dean told The verge that the existing Liminal tools will remain available on the Liminal site, but as Zoom develops these tools and integrates something similar into its platform, it will no longer be necessary to use them as an add-on let’s separate.
