Zingler: “We deliberately accepted losses” for Union Berlin’s development

After promotion and despite Corona

Union Berlin has firmly established itself in the Bundesliga after promotion in 2019 and is now one of the clubs that can regularly be found in the upper half of the table and even play for a European starting place. President Dirk Zingler sees the “iron” well positioned for the future despite the effects of the corona pandemic.

“We invested for over two years despite economic losses and consciously accepted losses because we didn’t want to interrupt our development and were convinced that we would come out stronger,” explained the 58-year-old in an interview with “Kicker”. In the past two years, Union has achieved fifth (2022) and seventh place (2021) in the German upper house. In terms of squad value, the Köpenicker club is in eleventh place with 114.35 million euros.

Despite the sporting successes, Zingler also said: “You won’t find anyone here who says that staying up in the league is no longer enough. The goal of staying up is a very honorable goal for us as a club. You have to do that every season. And rightly so, twelve or thirteen clubs in the Bundesliga have this goal at the beginning of each season.”

Union Berlin’s Zingler on limiting salaries and enjoying football

Meanwhile, the Union boss once again spoke out in favor of limiting salaries in European professional football. “We have to give ourselves even stronger financial rules,” said Zingler. “But in the corona pandemic, some commented on or moderated football almost completely. Today we have an enormous increase in membership at all clubs, we have full stadiums, football is still fun. A lot of what was talked about during the pandemic did not happen. ”One should think back to the positive effects of football.
