It may have been 13 years since Michael Schumacher had this skiing accident, but of course millions of people around the world are still touched by how the whole thing happened. Colleagues from the French newspaper L’Equipe put the whole thing together. A reputable newspaper, and there you can see and understand very well what happened there in the six months after the skiing accident. Also and how big this fight for the life and death of Michael Schumacher took place. It was a close fight and it was two surgeries that saved his life. And you practically feel for the doctors, nurses and nurses in the hospital in Grenoble on the day it happened and the day after. And also these three hours, which actually document how difficult the whole thing was from the beginning with the transport for the helicopter pilot and then ultimately after three hours being in the hospital and getting medical treatment there immediately. To be examined and treated. These are touching descriptions even for those who have been familiar with the matter for many years, because they also show the pressure everyone in the hospital was under, especially Michael Schumacher’s family with Corinna Schumacher and the two children Mick and Gina, who were 14 and 16 years old at the time. And of course his manager Sabine Kehm, who had to moderate the whole thing. A case she’s never had before, thank God. But then everything had to work. And of course the main task was how do you protect privacy in a large hospital, on a day that no one could have predicted? And it also shows the pressure the doctors were under. Even after you have determined who the patient ultimately is. And then of course you don’t want to do anything wrong and you know that everything is media-charged. Then there were two days that also pushed the clinic there in Grenoble to its limits, because of course, when the news got around, unfortunately a lot of people opened up to get information in order to break through the Schumacher family’s privacy. And you really have to compliment Corinna Schumacher again. As your husband Michael Schumacher always said between the public and the family, there is a moat and it should never be crossed or jumped over. And so she did what he wanted, which wasn’t easy because many people around her showed criminal energy. Can I take a picture of the patient Michael Schumacher? Can I give out information? And some of the information was outrageously wrong. This went as far as people saying they had heard he had died. So the most violent false reports were circulating and the hospital had to try to keep everything closed. And this criminal energy unfortunately remains to this day. There were several blackmail attempts against the family, against which they then successfully took legal action. There has been a theft of his medical records. The thief. The suspect was arrested and then hanged himself in the cell. A day later, terrible scenes, events surrounding this skiing accident and the days and weeks that followed took place. The doctors there did a very, very good job. Because one must not forget that the diagnosis was severe traumatic brain injury with a long coma with severe brain injuries, from which he naturally suffers to this day. And then those three hours until he was finally in the hospital. Of course, these are always in the minds of many reporters. You actually didn’t want to believe that a person who was so good at a sport, a high-speed sport, even had a supposedly minor skiing accident that then led to such a catastrophic result, unfortunately, you couldn’t imagine that. And that’s one of the most frequently asked questions by people who think of Michael Schumacher. Man, how could this all happen? Of course, you always think about the son Mick Schumacher, who was 14 years old at the time and was also at the accident with a family friend. He also experienced everything first hand. What kind of mental strain is this for a young person who sees his beloved father there and has to digest the whole accident and the consequences? Now he’s been a year on the road to becoming a successful Indy Car driver and has fought his way through. Alone even with the support of his mother. Corinna too, of course, and Sabine Kehm. But for him too, these were unforgettable memories, painful memories and also the friends who were by the family’s side at the time. And to this day there are only very, very few people who of course have access to Michael. For good reason, because we have seen that many people simply cannot handle this information, are not secretive enough and use this information to make capital, or are simply careless and do not understand the magnitude of what this information can do. And to this day it is Jean Todt, the then Ferrari racing director, then Luca Bardo, the Ferrari test driver Felipe Massa, his teammate and also Gerhard Berger and of course father Rolf and brother Ralf, who rushed to the hospital at the time and of course wanted to provide support in order to keep the family really close together. And what happened in the next few months is really in detail. It shows the extent to which you can actually trust people. No matter how narrow you have to draw this circle, also because there is always criminal energy that really tries to capitalize on it and then violate the privacy of the Schumacher family. This is in addition to the media pressure that the family had to endure and in which we of course also had our share, because the interest of millions of people in the state of health is understandable to this day, because he was one of the greatest, if not the greatest, German athletes of modern times. So there’s actually nothing new about it, but these descriptions of the first six months are such that you can really, really empathize with what happened during the entire accident and the next few days. And it’s simply touching, for example, that he was lying in a three-bed room as a normal patient with two other patients who had similar serious injuries and of course had their families with them. And the whole thing was practically only separated by a small, a small wall or a small, small curtain. And that again shows how dramatic the situation was that Corinna Schumacher didn’t have any VIP support or anything else at the time, but simply slept in a normal side room and then visited him every day. And as I said, it has now been 13 years. And of course many people ask themselves how is he? But we are also waiting for signs from the family as to whether a new message will be given to everyone. A sentence that is very, very close to me personally. This is Corinna’s. She then said to him Michael is different, but he is there. We live together at home. He has always protected us and now we are the ones protecting him. This actually shows with a big heart how he is doing and also how the family protects him. And I would like to end with Mick’s words, which are still valid today, that everything he could throw into the balance, everything he had, everything he would wish for, was in the world. A conversation with his father Michael Schumacher.
