Zelenski: Elon Musk promises more Starlink recipients

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelensky said he spoke to SpaceX owner Elon Musk on Saturday and announced that the country will be getting more receivers to use broadband internet via Musk’s Starlink satellite network.

“I spoke to Elon Musk. I am grateful to him for supporting Ukraine with words and deeds,” Zelensky tweeted. Musk said on Thursday that Starlink was the only non-Russian communications system still working in some parts of Ukraine after the Russian invasion.

At the end of February, Musk called in Starlink for Ukraine. The system uses satellites, so ground cables are not necessary. However, a receiver is required. SpaceX has now launched 1,900 satellites into orbit for the service. With this, Musk’s company wants to be able to offer broadband internet in remote areas, where, for example, no fiber optic networks are located.
