In 2017, Zelda: Breath of the Wild was released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. Since then, fans have been eagerly awaiting a sequel. TECHBOOK summarizes all rumors and information about “Breath of the Wild 2”.
“Breath of the Wild” – BotW for short – was the first major title for the then still new Nintendo Switch. Nintendo tailored the game precisely for its new handheld console and at the same time delivered what is probably the most detailed in-house open-world RPG to date. In fact, despite being the youngest in the series, it’s now the best-selling Zelda game of all time. Nintendo now wants to change this fact with the successor. In the meantime, some details about “Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2” are already known.
When will the new Breath of the Wild 2 be released?
After a long time there was no concrete news about the new “Zelda” part, Nintendo then announced in September 2022 out of nowhere on the Nintendo Direct the start date for his long-awaited game. Accordingly, “Breath of the Wild 2” should appear on May 12, 2023.
According to the announcement, the game is subtitled Tears of the Kingdom. In any case, there is already an important highlight for the Nintendo Switch for the year 2023! Like its predecessor, “BotW 2” will also be released exclusively for Nintendo’s console.

That’s what Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom will be about
Nintendo hasn’t officially said anything about the game’s plot yet. However, the rumors and of course the predecessor allow for some speculation. The sequel is supposed to tie directly to “Breath of the Wild”. In the game, the hero Link wakes up from a healing sleep after 100 years, as is typical for Zelda. However, while he spent a long time relaxing in the cave, Princess Zelda tirelessly battled the devastation Ganon and kept it at bay in central Hyrule. After the player and Link have freed the titans, four great fighting machines, from the evil influence and saved Zelda, everything actually seems fine at the end of the game.
In “Breath of the Wild 2” Link and Zelda are now rumored to be dealing with a completely new threat; not with Ganondorf this time. This is also suggested by the short clip that was released in 2019 together with news that Nintendo is working on another part of the series. It features a glowing green skeletal arm and a mummy-like creature that seems to be threatening Hyrule again.
This clip ignited the rumor mill and sparked wild theories on fan forums. In any case, it is striking that we see two versions of Link. One “normal” and one with longer hair and a modified arm. Fans suspect that the hero merges with the magic-technical Sheikah stone of the first part. that would also open up new gameplay possibilities.

According to the leak, Link does not have a Master Sword
The already known Leaker 4Chan could supposedly already get a pretty accurate picture of “Breath of the Wild 2”. Although the leaks of this person have proven to be correct in the past, the information should be treated with great caution.
According to the leak, Link’s green arm is actually an important part of the game mechanics, giving him new abilities. Based on the videos already published by Nintendo, this seems quite likely. Zelda, in turn, uses the Sheikah’s powers and devices known from part one. That makes sense, too, since the princess is dedicated to researching the ancient culture. Of course, it would be exciting if that means that this time she takes on a more active part in the game and maybe acts together with Link.
4Chan also claims that Link will have to do without his well-known and powerful Master Sword. This artifact is a well-known companion from other games, but even in Breath of the Wild the item was only optional. There is also talk of completely new and quite large mounts.
Trailer shows gameplay of new “Breath of the Wild”
Nintendo then showed a new Zelda video at E3 2021, which primarily shows Link floating and falling. We also see a threat appearing to rise from the earth. This, in turn, fuels fan theories that there is a far more dangerous creature lurking beneath Hyrule Castle than the one defeated in Breath of the Wild.
In the trailer that has now appeared to announce the release date of “Breath of the Wild 2” you can see murals in the style already known to the players. Then we see Link on a platform that seems to be floating above the clouds, from which he throws himself down. And from here it gets exciting. Because apparently the hero gets a completely new aircraft. This would also open up completely new exploration possibilities within the map already known from the predecessor.
The logo that appears afterwards with the lettering “Tears of the Kingdom” has the usual look again. Around it we see the greenish snake pattern already known from the clip
