Zeeparkduinen test case for extra protection
The Zeeparkduinen, between De Panne and Sint-Idesbald, are a kind of case for the general dune policy. Until 2016 there was a campsite here, now nature is gaining ground again. But because the zone has been a recreational zone since the 1970s, there are again plans to build 250 holiday homes, a hotel and a banquet hall here.
Maarten Tavernier, provincial councilor Groen: “There are still parts of the coast where such situations can occur. So we are actually asking the Flemish government to conduct a proactive screen of all potential dune areas that do not yet fall under the protection of the dunes decree. From that to look, and when it is appropriate to indicate from there not a hard but a soft destination.”
