Zalando introduces new fitting tool

Zalando introduces a new tool that helps to choose the right clothing size. Just two photos of your own body in tight-fitting clothing should be enough to determine the body measurements of the customers and to give them a size recommendation, the Berlin online retailer said on Monday. The tool is an industry first, “since no comparable platform has offered such a function to date”.

The principle of the function, which is now available in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, is currently only available for women’s fashion and can only be used for individual product categories such as jumpsuits, jackets, coats or dresses. More options are to follow in the future.

“Strengthening customer loyalty is very important to us. Being able to offer the right fit plays a big part in this,” explains Stacia Carr, VP Size & Fit at Zalando. “We know how frustrating it is to wait for an item and then realize it doesn’t fit. With the introduction of size recommendations based on body measurements, we are helping our customers to solve one of the biggest problems in the fashion industry.”

The new tool should help to reduce size-related returns in the long term and is a further step in helping customers to find their size. To date, the work of the in-house Size & Fit team, whose technologies are based on both its own technologies and developments by the Swiss app developer Fision, which was acquired in 2022, has reduced size-related returns by ten percent compared to items without size advice.

As recently as April, Zalando introduced a pilot project for trying on jeans virtually, and the new function should further pave the way for the full implementation of this tool. In the future, both functions can be integrated, according to Zalando, giving customers the opportunity to create a 3D avatar that even more accurately represents their body shape based on their individual body measurements.
