Zaanse fire brigade keeps youth wet in the Darwin Park and hopes for future growth

The temperature didn’t seem to want to drop on this sweltering evening, but that is certainly not the fault of the Zaan fire brigade. The men from the Botenmakersstraat fire station opened the taps in the Darwin Park, after which a large water spectacle was created.

Many people came to the water spectacle. Commander Herman Meijer is enjoying watching it. “These are tough days for us firefighters, but then these are fun things to do together.”

Youth is the future

He and his colleagues are here because it’s fun, of course, but also to get the youth excited to work in the fire service later on.

“Whoever has the youth has the future. We hope that the youth can mean something to us later on. We need firefighters, now and certainly also in the future.”

Meanwhile, some parents try to keep a safe distance from the water, but that is not always possible. A mother is pulled into the water by an enthusiastic father, which causes the necessary hilarity.

The firefighters themselves are trying to keep it dry today. “Because we are simply employed,” says Meijer, “and we can therefore receive a commitment.” But, he winks: “If we get a little wet, we’re just Dutch, so that’s no problem.”
