Turkey’s football competition is under a magnifying glass these days after the absurd action of the chairman of Ankaragücü football club. Faruk Koca knocked referee Halil Umut Meler to the ground. “He is one of the best referees,” says Mikhail Rosheuvel. The Zaankanter has been playing football in Turkey for three years and due to this incident he will not play this weekend.
“Halil Umut Meler is often put on top matches,” Mikhail Rosheuvel said from Eastern Turkey. The former AZ player is under contract with Erzurumspor FK. “I was amazed that this happened to him.”
“Grim”
Due to this violent incident, Turkish professional football has come to a standstill. “Everyone is a bit more emotional here compared to the Netherlands,” says Rosheuvel. “But this is also experienced as very extreme. There is also a somewhat hostile atmosphere in Ankaragücü, it is sometimes a bit grim.” The Turkish Football Association announced on Friday that the competition will resume next week. This means that Rosheuvel will face Ümraniyespor with Erzurumspor FK in front of their own audience on Wednesday.

Faruk Koca has now been banned for life by the Turkish Football Association and no fans are welcome at Ankaragücü’s next five home games. “In the Netherlands they stop matches when plastic cups are thrown, they laugh about that here. In Turkey you see more riots on the field and beyond, but this really shocked me.” Referee Halil Umut Meler is doing better given the circumstances. Earlier this week he was allowed to leave the hospital.
Erzurum
After his experiences in the Netherlands at clubs such as AZ, Almere City, Heracles, Roda JC, Cambuur and NAC, Rosheuvel left for Dubai. After his Arab adventure, the winger ended up at Erzurumspor FK. “Things are going well here. I live a fairly quiet life. Not much happens here, because it is a small town by Turkish standards. And at the moment it is very cold. There is a ski area close to Erzurum, but that is Not really my thing. I have a completely different life here than in Dubai.”
The Dutch competition is still closely following Rosheuvel and AZ in particular. “It remains my club and I would like to visit again soon. I am still in regular contact with former teammates from Alkmaar such as Ben Rienstra, Derrick Luckassen, Giliano Wijnaldum and Ridgeciano Haps.”

“I like to see Ruben van Bommel play football. Talented and effective for his age. I am also impressed by Ernest Poku. And Mexx Meerdink always makes me laugh when I see him on TikTok.”
He does not know what the future looks like for the fast attacker who won the cup with AZ in 2013. “My contract expires this summer, but I have nothing to complain about here. An excellent salary, private driver and Turkey is really a football country.” A return to the Netherlands after five seasons abroad seems logical, but the 33-year-old resident of Zaandam sees this differently. “I’m still fit and I’m actually open to anything.”
