It was an evening like any other for Yunus Emre. He was working in the Tokcel restaurant in the parking lot at the Hazeldonk border crossing. Until suddenly a panicked man ran in. “He shouted that there was a man covered in blood in the parking lot.”
Yunus can barely comprehend what happened. “A truck driver ran into our restaurant in a panic and asked in broken English if we wanted to call the police. He said that a man was lying injured in a pool of blood on the ground and that he had probably been stabbed. The driver had blood on his chest.”
“I saw someone lying on the ground and reported it to the police.”
Yunus did not hesitate and called 911. “The police asked if I would like to walk with the driver to the place where the victim was lying. To be sure that the story was correct and to indicate where exactly the man was lying. I did indeed see someone lying on the ground and reported it to the police.”
All emergency services will be on your doorstep in no time. “I think within nine minutes,” Yunus reflects. “Police, fire brigade, an ambulance and an air ambulance. I showed them the spot. Officers stretched ribbons and started to resuscitate the victim. Then I went back to the restaurant. I didn’t want to get in the way and I had done my duty.”
“I hope I never experience this again.”
There was no more work that evening. “The police had closed the parking lot for investigation. We then closed the restaurant and talked about what had happened. You don’t experience this every day and I hope to never experience this again.”
