He has shaped the lives of many children around the world like no one else: The creator of “Yu-Gi-Oh!” Kazuki Takahashi has died at the age of 60. His body was found floating in the sea off the coast of Nago, Okinawa Prefecture on June 6, 2022, and his identity has since been confirmed. According to the police, the artist wore snorkeling gear. The exact circumstances of death are not yet known.
Takahashi published his first manga, Tokiou no Taka, in 1990. Six years later, he had his big break with Yu-Gi-Oh! The manga is about the student Yugi Moto, who one day receives an old, three-dimensional puzzle that nobody has been able to solve before. However, Yugi Moto manages to put the puzzle together, whereupon the ghost of an old pharaoh whose memory has disappeared appears to him, with whom the shy student shares his body from then on. Together they try to restore the pharaoh’s memory, for which they must master the card game Duel Monsters.
“Yu-Gi-Oh!” : Series adaptation and trading card game
The manga has been adapted as a series several times. Under the name of “Yu-Gi-Oh!” ran one on the Manga based series also in Germany in the afternoon program of RTL and became a ratings hit. A trading card game based on the manga, which was distributed in Japan in 1999 and in Europe from 2001, also played a part in this. It inspired young people all over the world, who still regularly hold tournaments today.
