Youth protection is on the mend: additional supervision is no longer available

The enhanced supervision of Youth Protection Brabant (JBB) has been lifted. The Healthcare and Youth Inspectorate and the Justice and Security Inspectorate announced this on Tuesday. The inspectorates do note that youth protection does not yet have appropriate help for every Brabant child, but the JBB could do little about that. Youth protection was under strict supervision for a year. Before that, there was also extra supervision between 2019 and 2022.

The inspectorates still see the lack of a permanent youth protector for each child as a problem, but state that the cause lies outside JBB. It now mainly has to do with the way it is organized in the Netherlands. “JBB is doing what is within its power to ensure that this undesirable situation continues for as short a time as possible.” The inspectorates are confident that JBB can deliver on its promises.

According to the inspections, intensive supervision over the past year has shown that things are improving at JBB. This was confirmed in conversations with youth protectors, youth probation officers, the client council and the board. According to the parties involved, a recent reorganization has helped considerably to improve the situation.

Over the past year, the number of children without a permanent protector has fallen from 71 to 41.

The problems at JBB started in 2019, when it was determined that the quality of youth protection was seriously lacking. Afterwards, JBB was placed under increased supervision. From now on, JBB will again be followed by the inspections in regular supervision.
