Youth gang leader behind fatal stabbing Yorneo Emmen remains detained for three months

The 19-year-old from Groningen, who is seen as part of the group that played a role in the stabbing incident at youth care institution Yorneo in Emmen, will be detained for three months. That is what the judge decided today. The Public Prosecution Service sees the Groningen man as the leader of the group. A 26-year-old aid worker was killed in this incident.

A 16-year-old suspect from Ruinerwold and a 19-year-old man from Emmen were arrested shortly after the incident. Both admitted that they had been in the building on Stationsstraat to steal a safe. This got completely out of hand. The teens blame each other for stabbing the employee. During the interrogation, both said that they had to raid a gas station on Wolfsbergenweg in Emmen on behalf of a 20-year-old Emmenaar and a 19-year-old Groninger. This failed, because the case had just been closed.

The owner had no idea that his business was about to be robbed. He saw a few boys while locking the door, but he didn’t notice them. As a result, he only later reported the attempted robbery. But this failed robbery was, according to the public prosecutor, the beginning of the rounding up of this criminal gang. The plan to make money by robbing a gas station had failed. This gave rise to the idea of stealing the vault of the youth institution, where the youngest lived at the time.

Because this got completely out of hand, these two were arrested and they confessed to more violent robberies. It emerged from these statements that the 19-year-old Stadjer played a prominent role in this. Together with the 20-year-old Emmenaar, the Groningen man led a group of teenagers who committed robberies in various compositions. The criminal offenses were conceived and planned in the home of the twenty-something. The teenagers said that the Stadjer had received a tip about money in the gas station.

The 16 and 19-year-old were given a bag, clothing and a knife. This was also the case during the armed robbery of a McDonald’s restaurant on Hoenderkamp in Emmen on 9 January. The robbers were given a firearm, a bag and a face covering. Wearing balaclavas, the two threatened the employees behind the counter. A shot was fired. The two, the 16-year-old Emmenaar and a 17-year-old fellow townsman, captured more than 300 euros. The money was distributed in the home of the twenty-something. The Groningen man also benefited from this, the boys later told the police.

The Groninger denies. He was sometimes in the house in Emmen, but mainly stayed in the bedroom. There he slept or sat gaming. He kept aloof from what happened further in the house, the man is said to have stated. Due to the robbery of the fast food restaurant, the 17-year-old Emmenaar also came into the picture. The boy was released fairly quickly, but was recently arrested again in Germany, according to the public prosecutor. The cases of the five suspects are scheduled to be dealt with substantively at the end of January 2024.

Because several suspects are on trial in this criminal trial and there are a series of criminal offenses involved, several days will be allocated for this. The five suspects are still being psychologically examined, including the twenty-something in the Pieter Baan Center in Utrecht. The Stadjer’s lawyer asked to release the man. The judge did not agree. The matter is too serious for that.

The next introductory session is scheduled for September.
