Youp van ‘t Hek thinks Thomas van Groningen is too fat, gives out a sneer

Youp van ‘t Hek thinks Thomas van Groningen is a fat man and therefore gives him an ugly sneer. “That boy doesn’t need a dining table, he needs a ping-pong table!” he screams.

It’s starting to get a bit lame now: an occasional tease is nice, but Thomas van Groningen has been criticized a lot about his weight lately. The political reporter is much too fat, but he recently explained that there is not much he can do about it: “At Op1 you are fattened up. The whole cupboard is full of Twixes and KitKats.”

And so Thomas eats all those chocolate bars. Yet it is easy to say that he has control over that, because that is simply not the case. He thinks so himself. “I can leave the fries at Op1 and go to the salad bar in The Hague, but the bottom line is: I eat what is there,” he explains.

Despite that explanation, Thomas is now teased about his weight again, by Youp van ‘t Hek. The comedian points in his NRC column on the joke that Thomas pulled after the news about Op1’s discontinuation. During the broadcast, he took a tape measure out of his pocket to measure the talk show table: “We need a new kitchen table at home!”

Ping pong table

Lame, Youp thinks. “I wondered whether Thomas’s comment was a sensible one. I don’t think that sweet boy needs a dining table. More like a ping-pong table to get some exercise. Or is this fat shaming?”

So yes. In any case: Youp is more looking forward to the comeback of Matthijs van Nieuwkerk. Doesn’t he think that RTL should have waited for the investigation? “The answer is simple: Matthijs only has one life and cannot wait until Saint Juttemas. Because then Martin hopes to have his report ready.”
