Youp van ‘t Hek escaped serious injury during a car holiday in Italy. He was in a single car accident. “I ended up shaking on the emergency lane,” said the comedian.
69-year-old Youp van ‘t Hek will not soon forget his holiday in the southern European country of Italy. He had a perilous adventure on the autostrada last week. An adventure that he barely survived and fortunately can still retell in the latest edition of his VARAgids column.
Raised Youp
It was not exactly relaxed on the motorway in Italy, Youp admits. He has allowed himself to be quite aroused by fellow road users. “Everyone seems to be in a hurry there. Young and old,” he writes. “The tailgaters are very irritated and blow you into the right lane.”
Youp was completely swept away by that. “When I ride in Italy, I like to adapt. Although I’m not a license plate kisser and I don’t sit behind someone with the lights on. I’m too civilized for that. But apart from that, I’m happy to participate.”
Tire blowout
But that wild handling cost Youp dearly. “I had a blowout in a Sicilian tunnel last week. And I bounced very strangely across the road for a moment. It ended well because of seven angels on my shoulder. I ended up shaking on the emergency lane where three men in yellow fluorescent suits soon came and waved next to my car.”
To point out to all traffic the danger of a stationary car, of course. “It took three hours before my rental car was towed away by a car full of flashing lights. (…) I only thought one thing: I’m going to adapt a bit. Not to the Italians, but to the old people (and their driving behavior, ed.). Shame? Quite a bit.”
