Florian Wirtz reached another milestone with his appearance in the 2-1 win against 1. FSV Mainz 05. It was the 100th game in the Bundesliga for Bayer Leverkusen’s leading player and he was only 20 years, nine months and 20 days old. The attacking midfielder thus surpassed FC Bayern’s Jamal Musiala by four days and is in fourth place overall in the ranking. Only Julian Draxler, Timo Werner and Kai Havertz, who were also working for the Werkself at the time, were younger in history.
Wirtz new in top 5: Youngest player with 100 Bundesliga appearances
It would have been possible for Wirtz to place even higher if he hadn’t been out for months after tearing his cruciate ligament. Previously, on December 15, 2021, at the age of 18 years, seven months and twelve days, he made his 50th Bundesliga appearance as the youngest in history in German football’s upper echelon (Borussia Dortmund’s Youssoufa Moukoko has now undercut him), before he made his debut on December 13th. He suffered the serious injury in March 2022.
Wirtz, the third most valuable Bundesliga player with a market value of 100 million euros, is also, among other things, the ninth youngest Bundesliga professional on his debut (17 years, 15 days; for statistics) and the second youngest Bundesliga goalscorer (17 years, one month, three days; for statistics). ). This season he has five goals and ten assists in 23 games for Leverkusen and is in demand. Sports director Simon Rolfes recently expressed optimism about the future of the young star, who still has a contract until 2027: “When you see how he plays, you notice that he has an environment in which he can develop. Florian is a leader. He went through this maturation process. He will do the same for us next year in the Champions League.”
