Young stork van ‘t Zwin reaches Africa faster than ever

The stork covered a distance of more than 2,000 kilometers in a very short time. The stork moved south on August 6, two weeks earlier than usual. After a short stop of a few days in the northwest of France, the stork Elisabeth continued her journey through the west of France and right through the center of Spain.

Elisabeth reached the extreme south of Spain on August 24 and made the crossing to Morocco on August 25. “The Strait of Gibraltar is about 15 kilometers wide at its narrowest point. It took Elisabeth less than 20 minutes to make the crossing. It seems quite long, but in this area there are often strong winds that make it difficult and risky for migratory birds. to bridge the strait safely,” it sounds at the Zwin.

“It’s very exciting now to see what Elisabeth will do.” Storing the storks is part of the scientific research conducted by the nature park together with the RBINS (Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences) into the protected species.
