Young people smash open the doors of a Haarlem supermarket with fat bikes

Images are circulating on Facebook of young people using a fat bike to ram the sliding doors of the Jumbo supermarket on the Engelenburg in Haarlem Schalkwijk. The images were taken last Sunday at the end of the afternoon.

It shows two boys on a fat bike riding through the aisle of the supermarket just after half past six and then ramming the sliding doors at the end. Then they go outside with their bicycles. Then two more boys follow them on a fat bike and ride out via the same route. Next to the second fat bike, another boy runs along. Just down the hall, three people are watching what is happening.

Damaged door

The supermarket manager has little time for a response today. “We spoke to the police about this this morning.” It turns out that the boys did not steal anything, but only drove through the hallway. The door is quite damaged.

The boys are recognizable in the images, which were taken by a security camera. The post on Facebook states: ‘Would those who caused this please report to Jumbo at Engelenburg? Then we can talk about the damage that you need to compensate: if all goes well, you (parents) are insured for this. Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation & understanding and see you soon?’

Boys ram the door of the Jumbo with their fat bike – Facebook Jumbo Haarlem

It is not the first time that this supermarket has experienced something bad. In April 2020, a van rammed through the doors of the supermarket, narrowly missing an employee. The perpetrators were later arrested. It turned out that they had also committed a robbery in Alkmaar.

Fatbike gang

Haarlem, Heemstede, Bloemendaal and Bennebroek have long been plagued by young people on fat bikes who exhibit annoying and intimidating behavior. It is not clear whether these five boys belong to that ‘gang’.

‘Do not welcome these images’

The police are not in favor of showing the (probably) teenagers recognizable in the supermarket. “For us, there is a very careful procedure before we do something like this. For example, we first consult with the Public Prosecution Service and it depends entirely on how serious the offense is,” says a spokesperson.

“We certainly do not applaud the fact that a company puts these images online in this way. But in these times with a lot of social media, we understand it to some extent. It happens more often. But it is of course not good for a company or private individuals to do this in their own court. go play.”

The police spokesperson indicates that no report has yet been filed by Jumbo. The suspects on the fat bikes have also not been arrested.
