Young people and politics: from ‘just checking the voting guide’ to ‘having a clear preference’

On the day before the elections, voters are still in full swing. According to recent polls, 75 percent of voters are not yet sure which party they will vote for.

The elections are also a topic of discussion among young people today. At NHL Stenden University of Applied Sciences in Emmen, opinions are divided about the choice of party. Youth has the future, the students are well aware of that.

“You have the right to vote, so I would like to exercise it. We have the choice to vote and that is not the case in many countries. It is also a measure of gratitude that you can help choose what goes on. happen in the country,” says a student from NHL Stenden.

In addition to completing the voting guide, students can also be informed about political developments in another way. “I’m not very active in it, but on Instagram you have accounts that keep track of how parties respond to certain motions, which I find interesting to follow. And if you keep up with the news a bit, for five to ten minutes every morning, then You already get quite a lot and that makes a difference.”

The topics that NHL Stenden students are mainly concerned with are focused on the economy and the housing market. “My focus is on the students, for example, what will happen next with the breakdown generation and the loan system? I am in the last school year, so I am looking ahead to housing and the like, affordable housing for starters, for example. That does determine my choice .”

Another student indicates that he has already made his choice. “I have a good idea what I want to vote for, I’m going for the PVV,” he says. “I do not agree with all positions, but Wilders stands for lowering health insurance premiums, rent and a greater chance of housing, and I also support that.”

The students do not yet know what the House of Representatives should actually look like. “I like the don’t talk, just clean up mentality, so I hope that a coalition will be formed that knows how to tackle things. They really have to do something and not get stuck in discussions for too long.”
