Young motorist (20) before court for traffic drama Havelte

The 20-year-old motorist from Dwingeloo who was involved in a fatal crash in Havelte on April 17, 2022, must appear before the court in Assen today. The man is on trial for causing a serious accident in which a 16-year-old girl and a 21-year-old man were killed. Three other occupants, including the driver himself, were seriously injured.

The Public Prosecution Service (OM) previously announced that it would prosecute the young driver for driving under the influence and excessive speed. The traffic drama took place early that morning on Osseweideweg in Havelte. The five young people were in the car, which left the road around five in the morning and crashed into a tree. A number of occupants were freed by the fire brigade because they were trapped. An air ambulance was deployed.

The accident hit the home of those involved like a bomb. The 21-year-old victim who died was a member of the football club Dwingeloo. The club canceled matches on Easter Monday because of the impact that the tragic event had on the association and the Dwingeloo community, the board said at the time. Shortly after the accident, family and friends commemorated the young victims during a gathering at the scene of the accident.

During the impressive commemoration, flowers, candles and cards were placed on the spot. About 200 people had gathered that evening. The whole morning has been reserved for the hearing of the court case. Relatives will make use of their right to speak. In doing so, they let the court and the suspect know what this traffic drama has done to them.
