Young mother remains in jail for infanticide

The facts came to light on Tuesday evening, January 3, in the social residential area of ​​Blauwe Poort in Bruges. The victim’s mother was arrested for infanticide and guilty neglect after the discovery of the body. In the first instance, she was not brought before the investigating judge, because it was still unclear whether there had been a crime at all.

For example, it could also be a stillborn baby. After all, Claudia DC was convinced that her child was not alive. The first results of the autopsy quickly showed that the baby was indeed born alive. The girl was also fully grown. Further investigation will have to determine exactly how the child died. The mother denies that she used any form of violence.

According to the defense, Claudia DC didn’t even know she was pregnant. The reading of her mobile phone and the statements of relatives and friends would have confirmed this in the meantime. Master Elise Standaert again unsuccessfully pressed for a conditional release in the council chamber on Friday morning.

However, we are still waiting for the crucial autopsy report and the findings of the court psychiatrists. In those circumstances, the council chamber decided that DC should stay in prison for two months longer. The defense may appeal the court’s decision. As a result, the Ghent Chamber of Indictment (KI) will have to make a decision within two weeks.
