Young Dutchmen get three years in prison for robbery at a jeweler
Armed with hammers, they entered the building, smashed the display cases and made off with the loot. They were caught after a chase. At the time of the facts, they were barely nineteen years old.
On July 19, two masked men entered the Hoste jeweler in Stasegem. The owner was threatened with pepper spray and the robbers were armed with a hammer. They smashed shop windows. They also asked the woman to open the safe, but the woman collapsed and they took off with a bag of jewelry.
“A witness was able to film part of the flight and a hellish chase ensued,” said the prosecutor. “It ended after a crash against a concrete wall. One robber could be caught immediately, the other fled on foot. Only after a manhunt could he also be arrested.”
The criminal court sentenced the duo to three years in prison, half of which was suspended. “These are very serious offenses and therefore a strict punishment is appropriate,” said the judge. “But because it is the first time that you come into contact with the law, you still have a chance. That is why half of the prison sentence is suspended.”
