Once again a Dutch woman takes the lead in the Dutch Top 40. S10 has with her Eurovision entry The depth the most popular song in the country. The umpteenth sign that young Dutch women who sing in their own language have been the boss in the charts since 2018.
It all started with Takes too long by Davina Michelle. She participated in the program Dear Singers and put a Glen Faria song in a new jacket there. Music history, as it turned out. She knocked Celine Dion off her throne and is still the woman who soloed the longest with a song at number one (11 weeks) in the Dutch Top 40. In retrospect, this was the starting signal for a real revolution of young Dutch women. who stormed the charts in their native language.
A bit of context to understand what a unique situation the music industry has been in over the past five years. For Davina Michelle, Nienke (a role by Loek Beernink from The House of Anubis) in 2007 the last female singer to reach number 1 in the Top 40 solo in her native language. Ever since Takes too long conquered the number 1 spot in 2018, Dutch women spent a total of 44 weeks at the top of the Top 40 with songs in their own language. This number does not include Suzan & Freek’s number 1 hit, because they operate as a regular duo.

Collaborations
But who is responsible for this? In the first years it was mainly Maan and Davina Michelle and often in collaboration. For example, Maan, together with Tabitha and Kris Kross Amsterdam, scored a huge hit with He’s minelater she was even on one with Snel for ten weeks with Stay sleeping† Davina Michelle scored number 1 hits with How it dances (together with Marco Borsato and Armin van Buuren) and 17 million people (again Fast).
Since this year, things have also been moving forward in terms of solo work. Meau Hewitt had a hit with her single You did that. She was at the top spot in the national charts for no less than eight weeks. The jury selection of the Eurovision Song Contest also noticed that the Dutch music industry was thriving with young women and they opted for an entry in Dutch. S10 reached eleventh place on the Eurovision podium, but a week after her performance she ended up in first place in the Top 40.

New growth
It shows how fast things are suddenly going with the young Dutch women. And there seems to be enough new growth for the time being. For example, Froukje did not score in the Top 40 yet, but last year dragged 3voor12 with her number I want to dance the Song of the Year. Bente Fokkens stood out because of a collaboration with Maan and Emma Heesters scores hit after hit. Sigourney K is also well underway. She knew with the number Emergency lane (together with Antoon and Kris Kross Amsterdam) just missed the number 1 position, but had already been in second place for five weeks.
