Young couple from FC Volendam get few chances: “We have to be tough and honest”

After three games, FC Volendam is still winless in the Eredivisie. After the lost match against FC Twente (0-2), coach Matthias Kohler was particularly critical of the few opportunities his team played together. “We have to be tough and honest with each other,” says the coach.

The first half hour Volendam was able to keep up with the level of FC Twente. Garang Kuol had a great chance that sailed past the intersection and just before half time another slider that went just centimeters wide. “We still have to take steps in this regard,” says Kohler, who believes that his team should continue to build on the first three games.

The average age of Volendam was only 21.1 years. At 27 years old, captain Damon Mirani was the oldest player on the side of the North Hollanders. Against Twente, Volendam was on average the youngest premier league team of the past six years. Calvin Twigt is only 20 years old, but was the most experienced player in midfield. He set out the lines together with Imran Nazih (17 years old) and Milan de Haan (19 years old).

Next weekend, the team is free due to the international match period and it may well end up in calm waters again. After the departure of Daryl van Mieghem, Henk Veerman, Darry John Murkin and Carel Eiting, Volendam has to rebuild. On the other hand, there were fearfully few incoming transfers. However, Kohler expects that enough quality has been brought into the house. “We have made good purchases. We have acquired an international format,” says Kohler, who looks back with mixed feelings on the transfer soap around Carel Eiting.
