It was an evening to quickly forget for Jong AZ. At home, the match against FC Groningen ended in a hard loss: 0-5. “It was a difficult match, the biggest defeat so far this season. That is certainly not nice,” Wouter Goes was clear afterwards.
“We played with a lot of defenders, also in midfield. It was therefore difficult to let the ball go,” Goes mentions as one of the reasons for the loss. “Groningen also played a good match. We had little to say.” For the first time in more than a month, the young defender picked up minutes in the first team on Sunday.
A big change compared to last season, in which he frequently replaced the injured Sam Beukema and Bruno Martins Indi. “Riechedly Bazoer and Martins Indi are now there, I am working hard to regain my place. As long as that doesn’t happen, I have to make minutes at Jong AZ. I was also injured at the start of the season. This gives others their chance seized.”

It was the first time this season that AZ’s youngsters were dried in this way. “Hopefully this was also the last time,” says trainer Jan Sierksma. “Unfortunately it will be 0-5, this should not happen.”
Formation change
De Fries saw that his change in formation did not have the desired result. “Both halves were not good enough today. Normally we are good on the ball. We kept getting into transition moments and that is where Groningen’s strength lies. It also didn’t help that we had a number of players in different positions.”

Pascal Jansen decided that Goes had to leave after 63 minutes in view of the match against Zrinsjki Mostar in the Europa League on Thursday. “I just hope to make as many minutes as possible. Now it was five, let’s go to ten and then keep going.”
Jong AZ will be in action again on Friday evening, MVV will be the opponent in Maastricht. The question remains whether Goes will participate again.
