The football players of AZ O19 receive a tribute in Alkmaar. Mayor Anja Schouten has just announced this on NH Radio. It is not yet clear when the men will be hoisted onto the shield. “We are now discussing this with many parties.”
For the first time in history wins a Dutch club the prestigious European title. And that should be celebrated, says the proud mayor of Alkmaar. “I have to be neutral, but that never works. What a goal machine, I enjoyed it. Of course we will pay tribute to them and put them in the spotlight.”
Schouten was also fully involved in the competition, she says. “I followed it on my iPad, but I got more and more into it after the first half. I saw them play once in Barcelona and I was very impressed. They don’t let themselves be fooled and stay as young professionals take control.”
Small party
Several parties, the municipality and AZ, but also the municipality of Wormerland because the team trains in the Zaan region, are now discussing a ceremony. Which will be held in Alkmaar anyway, says Schouten. “A date and location have not yet been announced.”
The team is already celebrating a small party at the youth location tonight, she tells us. “The bus just got there.”
