Young AZ basic debutant Meerdink follows in his father’s footsteps

Fifteen minutes before the end, he seemed to give his basic debut extra shine with a hit. Unfortunately, Mexx Meerdink’s header just didn’t go in. The young striker was one of the three basic debutants at Jong AZ, which won 2-0 against VVV Venlo on Friday evening.

At Jong AZ, strong holders such as Mo Taabouni, Peer Koopmeiners and Yusuf Barasi were missing. As a result, several new talents received playing time from trainer Maarten Martens. One of those talents was eighteen-year-old Mexx Meerdink. He comes from Winterswijk in the Achterhoek and made the switch from De Graafschap to AZ a few years ago. This season he will officially play for AZ -18, but is increasingly allowed to participate in the Alkmaar promise team.

Meerdink went to the side ten minutes before the end, exhausted. The young striker was left with a mixed feeling after his basic debut. Not everything went well with him, but he also regularly held the ball well. He also provided a lot of energy in the Alkmaar vanguard. He inherited that hard work from his father. Meerdink senior played football for AZ from 2002 to 2007 and was an important link in the successful years of Co Adriaanse. Now Martijn Meerdink is the proud father of a new AZ talent.

Due to the corona rules, Martijn Meerdink saw his son in action on TV. That may be the case again on Monday, when Jong AZ will play the make-up match against TOP Oss. This game was canceled two weeks ago due to the many corona infections at the Alkmaarders.
