From Marty Friedman to Jimi Hendrix: In your opinion, these virtuosos master the guitar like no one else.
The story of the guitar is far from being told in 2023. That would be a shame – the iconic musical instrument of the 20th century produced many legendary musicians. Who exactly is included? This is debatable. While in the current issue we present you the list of – in our opinion – the 100 best guitarists of all time, specifically highlighting Jimi Hendrix, we have you on Instagram asked about your top guitarists. You commented diligently and we don’t want to withhold the final result from you. Here come what you think are the best guitarists in the world.
You mentioned these guitarists most often on social media:
1. Johnny Marr
As a songwriter for the Smiths, the Englishman significantly influenced the style of indie rock. If you then add his solo projects or collaborations with Talking Heads, Pretenders or The The, you ask yourself: How does this guy actually do all of this?
2. Jimi Hendrix
In a very short time, an ouvre was created that made Jimi Hendrix immortal. The versatile guitarist rightly adorns the ME cover of the 12/23 issue.
3. Lee Ranaldo
The American appears beyond any doubt simply because of his involvement in Sonic Youth. One should by no means ignore his work as a solo artist.
4. Marc Ribot
A jazz guitarist like he is in the book. The virtuoso has mastered every technique ever played on the guitar – even though he is left-handed and plays a right-handed guitar.
5. Marty Friedman
Things are much harder for thrash metal musician Marty Friedman. Even before Megadeth’s success, Friedman delivered fast and demanding guitar riffs and improvisations.
6. David Gilmour
The Pink Floyd songwriter always has one foot in the blues. His melodic feel and his penchant for funk make it seem as if his guitar is singing in some moments. The use of reverb and delay effects also help Gilmour’s playing to have a flowing sound.
7. J Mascis
The Dinosaur Jr. frontman brought lead guitar back into rock in 1987 with the album YOU’RE LIVING ALL OVER ME. Using a fusion of noise, indie rock and pop melodies as a basis, the singer and guitarist played crashing and distorted guitar solos long before the term “gundge” was coined.
