“You shouldn’t forget to take your medicine”

Pate Mustajärvi now talks directly about life after Popeda. In the new phase of life, taking care of well-being is emphasized.

When Popeda was left behind, Pate Mustajärvi was relieved and grateful.

He survived some pretty crazy years.

– From this ride, my stop was in Ratina. When you leave something like this, after a while you don’t remember anything about it, not even who you were there with. It could be a post-traumatic stress reaction that I don’t even want to think about the whole thing, he throws a twinkle in the corner of his eye to Iltalehti.

Letting go was definitely not easy. It required hard work and catapulted the rock star to the top. Diary entries were tied to a fresh one It ended with a bang – 46 years of Popeda (Docendo) book.

Mustajärvi recorded the sad verses of his heart about the death of his old self. Sometimes stardom can become an all-consuming scourge that drains your strength and takes more than you give.

– It’s a universal thing: when dudes start a band, the attitude is “we are us, and we don’t give a damn”. Suddenly you realize that you are a prisoner of that story, Mustajärvi characterizes.

The narrative has something similar to Jare Tiihonen in describing how he “had to kill Cheek”.

Ikuri’s son from the Dunari family does not walk away from a good job easily. Popeda was a goose that laid golden eggs. Year after year, festival main stages, large halls, hits and popularity that shows no signs of abating.

– However, I don’t want to be the duna who sticks his neck in the slime until he has a heart attack.

Popeda’s new soloist is a tabula rasa for him – a blank slate. Ollie HermanAccording to his own words, he knows nothing about singing in. All he saw on TV was a stylish guy in his forties.

He doesn’t want to think about it anymore.

Well-being first

New Get out of harm’s way -single is the dawn of Pate 2.0.

When he sings, he sings to his wife, like any grown man committed to his union.

He also sings about love on his Pelkkä Patee solo tour starting in Ylivieska in September. The renovation is supposed to bring out the sensitivity that the Ikuri rock man has avoided revealing all his life and medicated with various liquids.

He now wants to talk directly about what it feels like to be a 67-year-old man with all his kinks. It’s no secret that Mustajärvi’s blood pressure went through the roof and he underwent leg surgery at the end of last year.

So that age is just a number?

– Bad berries, it’s really not, Mustajärvi laughs.

Pate Mustajärvi says that he suffers from hypertension, which is a traditional Finnish national disease. Health Library according to, stress, smoking, alcohol, licorice, and high salt consumption in the diet raise blood pressure. In recent years, Mustajärvi has changed its lifestyle in a healthier direction in many areas.

He shares his ways to keep his blood pressure down.

– I pull that button every morning. The doctor’s instructions shouldn’t be taken lightly, and you shouldn’t forget to take your medicine for no reason, he says.

– The situation is under control when you sleep properly, go swimming, pole-walking and ride a motorcycle in the summer, and don’t rush anywhere.

Wife Tiina Mustajärvi as a result, lifestyles and eating habits have taken a leap in a lighter direction.

– If in the 80s and 90s we often ate sausage with sausage and beer on top. Now the fish is good. At some point, I realized when eating out that you don’t always have to have pepper steak. After fish and vegetables, there is no heartburn at night and you feel lighter.

Last November, the rock legend had a tailor’s bandage cut from his leg, but the healing of the surgical wound took a setback. During his book launch gig at Tampere’s working theater, Mustajärvi spent half the time sitting on a chair – yet at the end of the evening the pain was unbearable.

– I sat in an armchair with the interviewer before the gig, on top of that I changed weaves and we had a one-hour jazz gig. The crowd was on fire, but when I got to the back room after the encore, the damn fine Italian shoes flew off. That burn was absolutely terrible. The leg is still not well, he says.

– The stitches were removed too soon, and the wound has not had a chance to heal. I will no longer wear boots in this life.

The use of a walking stick after leg surgery also resulted in nasty back problems, which he had to treat with a chiropractor.

– I thought, Is this what the rest of life is now, that there is always a problem somewhere. When I was younger, if I crashed my motorcycle and broke something, it didn’t take more than a couple of weeks and you were back on the motorcycle’s horns. Now it feels like when you knock something, it never gets better, he laughs.

Social hate is terrifying

Mustajärvi approaches the spiritual side of aging with a twinkle in his eye. The 67-year-old rocker doesn’t have to be in the mood for everything.

Pate is in big trouble when he tries to open the label’s file on his new single and screams his wife’s name in distress.

He watches in horror the curses of the social media world, how especially young female artists are beaten in the comment fields of social media.

– It’s like an inquisition straight from the 17th century! It can be compared to witch hunts, the way female artists are hunted down. It’s brutal what they have to read about themselves. You don’t envy a pop singer or a politician. The self-esteem of a young boy from Ikuri would have collapsed quickly if I had read such things about myself in my youth.

– I can only thank my luck that there were no camera phones at that time, and the festival bakers could party in peace. I don’t wonder about today’s pop stars who are in Burnout after ten years.

Getting older has brought with it the ability to focus on the essentials. For Mustajärvi, a relationship that works is one of the sources of feeling good in life. He reveals that he and his wife found out about their genetic inheritance, which explained the attraction of opposites.

– We had a DNA test, and it turned out that my roots go through Ostrobothnia to Scotland and from there to Ireland. That’s probably why certain things I liked a lot in my former life, Pate laughs.

– On the other hand, Tiina is a hundred percent Lapland woman. He accelerates from 0 to 100 in less than a second and I have the nerves of a cow. Maybe we compensate each other in that sense. That makes our relationship pretty fascinating.

Mustajärvi still wants to dispel one persistent rumor.

Some parties have claimed that Mustajärvi’s departure from Popeda started already ten years ago, when he found his current life partner. Evil tongues have said that 2013’s falling in love began its finale.

– At that point it was not in mind that this is here. There were a lot of great gigs, he looks straight in the eyes.

Instead, he made the previously described life change, left Popeda’s gig bus and changed his lifestyle to support his own well-being. At that time, he started driving to gigs in his own car with his wife by his side.

– The party ended then, not the calling! That’s when things became more professional, and it wasn’t out of the humor between the guys, he sums up.

This is what the renewed Pate 2.0 looks like. – a man who dares to talk about his feelings. Henri Kärkkäinen
