“You put pressure on me”

Borussia Dortmund wins 5-1 against SC Freiburg, crawls up to FC Bayern Munich at least overnight. But the second win in the second game in the second half of the season is of little interest after the game. After his double pack, Erling Haaland was very annoyed by his current employer in an interview with the Norwegian broadcaster “Viaplay”. With pithy words he indicates his departure from Dortmund.

Out of respect for Dortmund, I haven’t said a word about my future for the past six months, I let everyone else speak,” said the 21-year-old: “The club is trying to put pressure on me, to force me into a decision. I really just want to play football, but she’s pushing me to make a decision about my future. And that means I have to make a decision soon.”

Haaland is still under contract with BVB until the summer of 2024, but an exit clause allows him to switch this summer for a sum well below his actual market value. According to media reports, the clause should be between 75 million and 85 million euros. Borussia Dortmund had recently pushed for clarity with an increased number of strokes in order to plan the squad for the new season. The Dortmund officials had been cautiously optimistic to the outside world recently, and even shareholders and suppliers Puma had gotten involved in the fight for one of the upcoming superstars of world football.

Haaland: “I don’t want to think about anything but football”

The bold Dortmund style was obviously not met with approval by Haaland. “They just put a lot of pressure on me,” continued the Norwegian: “I have to accept that. I haven’t said anything for a long time, out of respect for the club and respect for the fans.” Haaland kept coming back to the pressure. “They want a decision now and things are going to happen now,” he said.

“I don’t want to think about anything but football because it gets difficult when I have other things on my mind, but now they’ve been pushing for so long that I’ll start things,” added Haaland, who was annoyed by it that the club is interfering with him and the team at a crucial stage of the season. He said: “We’re in a tough period with a lot of games, I really just want to play football but I can’t.”

BVB boss Watzke: “We can’t wait until the end of May”

BVB Managing Director Hans-Joachim Watzke reacted to the star striker’s statements seemingly calmly. “He’s a spontaneous person, a young lad. He’s allowed to do that,” he told the “Ruhr Nachrichten”: “There’s no problem with Erling at all. But he also has to have some understanding of our situation. We can’t until the end of May wait.”

Most recently, Erling Haaland was primarily associated with a move to Real Madrid. Cash-strapped FC Barcelona are also interested in Norwegian, who has scored 21 goals in just 18 competitive games for BVB so far this season. Bayern Munich are also dealing with the 21-year-old. On the sidelines of the Ballon d’Or award ceremony in 2021, there is said to have been a meeting between representatives of the record champions and Haaland’s agent Mino Raiola.
