you can score them here in Zoetermeer

Daily freshly baked bread for a few euros, that is what we are used to in the bread department of supermarkets. But what happens to freshly baked breads that are not sold the same day? Jumbo simply sells them the next day, sometimes for only 25 cents.

Since this week, the retail chain has been selling loaves of bread that have been baked a day earlier throughout the country, such as Jumbo in the De Vlieger shopping center (Rokkeveen) and in Oosterheem. This supermarket chain hopes to combat food waste with this, although customers are particularly charmed by the price.

Special rack

The loaves, buns or buns are in the special rack until 11:00 am for 25, 50 or 75 cents. For example, you pay 25 cents for half bread, 50 cents for a bag of buns and 75 cents for a luxury whole loaf. If there is any bread left after that time, the remains go to the animal feed industry, Jumbo reports.

‘Every penny makes a difference’

The promotion is popular with customers. “This is just a godsend. Why should you throw that bread away? You can still eat it just fine,” says Hans Peeters (68) to the Gelderlander. And the price? “That’s the best as far as I’m concerned. I can get by just fine, but with today’s prices, every cent saves.”

Sacha de Groot (31) is also pleased with it. “If you find the bread just a bit too chewy, you can toast it and eat it anyway. And yes, it saves a lot of money. I certainly would have known this when I was a student.”
