American hip hop show Yo! MTV Raps” is being reissued. The cult format ran on MTV between 1988 and 1995 and was hosted by Doctor Dré (not to be confused with Dr. Dre), Ed Lover and graffiti artist Fab 5 Freddy. Many legendary rappers were guests, including EPMD, Ice-T and Public Enemy. MTV is now planning a new edition of the show – with an old show concept but new hosts.
“Yo! MTV Raps” by DJ Diamond Kuts and Conceited. A statement from Paramount+ said: “After their debut 33 years ago, on August 6, 1988, ‘Yo! MTV Raps’ the most important address for everything that had to do with hip-hop. By igniting a global enthusiasm for the hip-hop genre and its associated subculture, the series was essential to the rise of rap music worldwide.” The show will feature talks, live performances, lifestyle content and cyphers.

The former moderators are not included in the new edition of their show. In an interview with the American hip-hop magazine “Hip HopDX‘ Doctor Dré spoke in 2018 about a possible remake of ‘Yo! MTV Raps”, but doubted that the format still works today: “The special thing about “Yo! MTV Raps” were the music videos back then. I don’t know if that still works in today’s streaming world.” Interested parties can probably get a picture of the new edition from May 24, 2022 on the American streaming service Paramount+. Whether and where the show will run in Germany is not yet known.
But there is also a German version of the show. It has been running under the same name as the original show on MTV Germany since March 2019. It is currently moderated by MC Bogy, Aminata Belli and Alex Barbian.
