Yemen ceasefire extended by two months

The ceasefire in war-torn Yemen will remain in place for two more months. The warring parties have agreed to an extension of the ceasefire that has been in force since April 2 and was due to expire this Thursday, according to the United Nations.

One of the agreements made is a pause from all military operations inside and outside Yemen, allowing ships with fuel to enter the port of Hodeidah and return to commercial flights from Sanaa for the first time in years.

The civil war erupted after Iran-backed Houthi rebels took the capital in 2014 and the Yemeni government, aided by Saudi Arabia, launched a counteraction. The struggle has led to the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

The conflict in Yemen has killed more than 150,000 people, according to the United Nations. In addition, 4 million people have been displaced and around 19 million people will go hungry this year, according to the UN.
