Years later, Franky and Coen are still baking fries in Ukraine: ‘Can’t let go’

When Franky and Coen went to Ukraine with their chip cart a year ago, they probably didn’t think it would become their new home base. The men from Helmond and Waspik drive back and forth to the war zone. And now they are baking fries, frikandellen and croquettes there again.

“Once you’ve done it once, it becomes something beautiful that you can’t let go of,” says Coen van Oosten. “Yes, every time we go home we want to come back here,” adds Franky van Hintum. “If you have seen and felt how happy people are with fries and our support, you will continue to do so.”

“We now have a large budget, so we want to spend it well.”

Every day they bake two thousand portions of fries and snacks for the local population and military. But that’s not all. Thanks to Franky and Coen, a new operating room has been opened in a hospital in Kiev. “We’ve been in the media a lot and that’s why we get a lot of donations,” says Coen. “We now have a budget that is larger than just baking fries, so we want to spend that well,” says Franky.

“For some, it’s the first time in a long time that they’ve had a hot meal.”

Franky and Coen first went alone to the Polish border, but now they drive all over the country. Franky: “At many locations, the power supply is limited, so they often cannot cook. So for some it is the first time in a long time that they have a hot meal.” They are still in Boetscha on Friday, but this weekend they will drive further into the country, where it is even more extreme. “It’s really, really needed, so we’re going to keep doing it.”
