In good form at Inter
Swiss national goalkeeper Yann Sommer felt he was treated unfairly and unfairly criticized by the public during his time at FC Bayern Munich. “I learned how things work at Bayern. You pick one or two players and then the media shoots. And then you choose two new ones. And then it was my turn. But I didn’t feel like defending myself publicly,” said the 34-year-old on the sidelines of the national team, according to Swiss media.
His national coach Murat Yakin made a similar statement in September and harshly criticized the way Sommer was treated: “The time at Bayern did not leave him unscathed. He needs basic trust in order to be able to perform at 100 percent. Yann was dragged through a mud slingshot. He didn’t deserve that. He became a victim of a mechanism that only happens at Bayern.”
With Kane and Sommer: FC Bayern’s most expensive over-30 purchases
Sommer, who became the most expensive over-34 goalkeeper in history, played for Munich from January until the summer of this year, after which he moved to Inter Milan. During his time at the Bundesliga club, the coaching change from Julian Nagelsmann to Thomas Tuchel also took place. “We had an extremely wild situation at Bayern. Layoffs, changes, a lot of unrest and various topics besides sport,” he said looking back.
Sommer won his first title with FC Bayern since 2014 – good Inter debut
Sommer moved to FC Bayern after the serious injury to national goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (37) and was constantly faced with insecurities there. “Of course it was unpleasant at times and it doesn’t leave you unscathed,” said the long-time Borussia Mönchengladbach keeper about the criticism of his performances. “The most important thing was that I tried to perform and help the team be successful. Luckily, we managed to do that in the end,” said Sommer, who became German champions with the Munich team after being eliminated from the cup and Champions League on the last matchday.
It was his first team title since the Swiss championship with FC Basel 1893 in 2014. With Inter, Sommer is currently in second place in Serie A behind city rivals AC Milan after a strong start to the season. In ten competitive games so far, the Nerazzurri’s regular goalkeeper, successor to André Onana (27, who moved to Manchester United), has only had to fall behind six times.
