The upcoming operation scares Yana a lot, but she is still interested in what will happen to her. On the right is the girl’s father, Petro. Over

A 9-year-old who came to Finland from Ukraine Yana suffers from bone cancer, i.e. osteosarcoma. He is being operated on Alive 24h in the series.

The operation takes place at the New Children’s Hospital in Helsinki, and the orthopedist works Mikko Haara.

– We are doing bone cancer surgery. We remove a malignant tumor from the lower part of the femur. We replace the lack of tissue and bone with a tumor prosthesis designed for him separately, Haara says on TV.

The operation is multistage. First, the lower part of the femur and the tumor inside are removed, and then the part of the lower limb is sent to the pathologist. After that, it’s time for a break.

– Now we’re going to eat and then we’ll move on to the reconstruction phase, Haara says in the series.

– Yana is a very active child, Oksana’s mother describes her daughter on TV. Over

When the surgery continues after the meal break, a custom-made prosthesis is installed on the little girl. It will later have a motor, which can be used to extend the prosthesis according to Yana’s growth.

The cameras follow in the operating room when a problem unexpectedly occurs in the installation.

– There’s something wrong with it, one of the professionals notices that some parts don’t fit perfectly.

The reason will soon become clear.

– Mikko, it was the wrong way round! the orthopedist is told.

Haara repeats what she heard with a sigh.

– No joke! Well, it didn’t go without.

When the prosthesis has been successfully placed, the third important step follows. The wound must be closed. However, the skin cannot only be closed so that there is a prosthesis immediately under it.

– Then there is an infection gate directly to that big metal prosthesis. We somehow have to put soft tissue on top of the prosthesis and close the skin over it, Haara describes the final stretch, which goes well.

Before finishing the operation, Haara still moves the leg, which is in just the right position. After that, it’s time to take the good news to the grateful parents.
