In the bid for the services of Bayer Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso, Liverpool FC is giving FC Bayern great competition. A club legend from the Premier League club gives his assessment of poker – and hopes that the German record champions come away empty-handed.
FC Bayern or FC Liverpool? This is the question that will probably arise for Xabi Alonso if he leaves Bayer Leverkusen next summer and moves to a bigger club. John Barnes, who once played for the Reds for ten years, sees arguments for both applicants.
“Liverpool and Bayern Munich both have a big squad and are both great clubs,” the 60-year-old told “Bonuscodebets.co.uk” with a view to Alonso’s likely future options. “Both clubs would suit him. They have a great history, tradition and fans.”
The German record champions will “always be the best team in Germany, regardless of what Bayer Leverkusen has done this season,” emphasized Barnes, who, however, made no secret of the fact that he would rather see Alonso in Liverpool.
“If Alonso wants a bigger challenge, then Liverpool would be more attractive because the Premier League is much tougher competition,” said the ex-professional.
“Comfortable life” for Alonso at FC Bayern?
Replacing Jürgen Klopp at Anfield will also be “difficult,” said Barnes. “If Alonso wants a comfortable life, then he will probably go to Bayern Munich. Is winning the championship in Munich a great achievement?”
Which club actually has the better prospects of signing Alonso is controversial. However, Italian transfer expert Fabrizio Romano recently announced that, according to his sources, staying in Leverkusen was unlikely.
However, Alonso is not expected to make a decision any time soon. “He will take his time because he wants to focus on Bayer Leverkusen. They can achieve something historic this season and he doesn’t want any distractions,” explained the well-connected reporter in his “Daily Briefing”.
