Ex-president of Russia Dmitry Medvedev got his nose from the X message service, where he tried to joke about Finland’s NATO membership. The service added a fact box under Medvedev’s message in Finnish.

– Finland decided to join NATO after Russia started a war of aggression against Ukraine, the fact box mentions.

In Medvedev’s message, flavored with a meme made with artificial intelligence, he tells how Finland’s NATO membership would appear contradictory. He suggests that Finland would have joined NATO because of the threat posed by Russia, but that Russia threatens Finland only because Finland is in NATO.

Based on comments made by Iltalehti, the fact box in question is visible to some of X’s users. Some people don’t see the fact box at all, and some get a different kind of fact box with an almost similar message. The small print text says that the fact boxes are only visible to a small test set. Apparently X is testing which of the fact boxes gets the best reception, and then it will be visible to everyone.

Several updates previously made by Medvedev in the X-messaging service have received a corresponding fact correction. According to Russian sources, the former president makes his updates mostly drunk.

Dozens of Finns came to comment on the message thread. Some made fun of Medvedev for his alleged way of combining drinking culture with social media updates, while others told facts about the real reasons for Finland’s NATO membership.

Iltalehti’s podcast program Politiikan puskaradio also participated in the acknowledgment to Medvedev in its own style.
