WWDC 2023: Apple could show new MacBooks

Apple’s first big event for 2023 – the Worldwide Developers Conference, WWDC for short – is imminent. We can expect a number of innovations, including refreshed MacBooks.

The developer conference WWDC will take place in June 2023 and, according to insider information, Apple could not only present the next versions of its operating systems, but even new Macs or MacBooks. A lot of Mac models are currently in development and some may be close to launch.

Allegedly 7 models in development

According to a report by the always well-informed trade magazine “Bloomberg”, Apple is working on a series of new Macs and MacBooks to be released in 2023 and early 2024. Not only a revised MacBook Air with a 13-inch screen, but for the first time a new Air model with 15 inches is in the works. There will also be a 13-inch MacBook Pro again, as well as refreshed 14- and 16-inch Pro models. In addition, the 24-inch iMac is to receive an update for the first time since 2021. The first Mac Pro with Apple’s own chips is also in the works.

According to Bloomberg, however, only some of these models are planned for WWDC 2023. These are probably those devices that have not yet received an update to Apple’s M2 chip. Because the M3 should only be presented later in the year. There are therefore three specific devices that we can expect for June.

Three Mac and MacBook models could come to WWDC 2023

An all-new 15-inch MacBook Air could come with the M2 chip, which is also found in the current 13-inch Air. The laptop would be a cheaper alternative to the 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros for those who need a larger screen but don’t need the higher performance of the Pro models. Another candidate for the presentation in June is the iMac 24 inch, which was released in 2021 with a completely redesigned housing and M1 chip. The iMac was the only device left out in the 2022 refresh round, where all M1 models received the M2. Now the family iMac could get a faster chip after all. The launch of the two models seems relatively certain, as new Mac models have recently appeared in developer test logs. The logs indicate, among other things, a new MacBook Air that comes with a chip with 8 CPU cores and 10 GPU cores. This indicates that it is the current M2.

The final possible contender for a WWDC 2023 presentation is the Mac Pro. Apple’s high-end computer received its last update in 2019 and since then has only been configurable with Intel processors and AMD graphics cards. Instead, Apple introduced the much more compact Mac Studio in 2022, which, despite its tiny size, competes with the Mac Pro in the best configuration. Despite the extremely high price of up to 62,000 euros, the current Mac Pro is a slow seller. Apple has been working on converting its high-end model to its own silicon chips for some time. A refreshed Mac Pro with an “M2 Extreme” was still expected in 2022. But production problems make the launch loud Bloomberg uncertain. It therefore remains to be seen whether Apple will be able to overcome the hurdles by June. Otherwise, a later presentation with a completely new M3 architecture as a basis is more likely.
