After the Olympic Games, Christian Wück will become the national coach of the German footballers and thus succeed Horst Hrubesch. The previous coach of the U17 team will take over the position in the summer, as the DFB announced. The contract term was not initially stated. The 50-year-old ex-professional Wück first led the U17 juniors to the European championship title last year and then even to the world championship title. He will look after the DFB U15 until he takes office.

“Christian Wück is a proven expert and he speaks the language of the players. “He has proven in the past that he can develop personalities and form teams into a cohesive unit,” said DFB President Bernd Neuendorf. Maren Meinert will be the assistant coach.

Wück added: “I am very much looking forward to the new task and consider it a great honor to be able to take on it. When the request came, I didn’t hesitate for long: coaching this team, further developing the existing individual quality of the players and thus making the team fit for success in the future is one of the most exciting and responsible tasks in German football. It makes me proud that I will accompany and shape this path to the Olympics.”

The German women under Hrubesch secured Paris’s participation in the Olympics last week with a 2-0 win against the Netherlands in Heerenveen. The 72-year-old’s commitment was limited from the outset until then. The former icon striker then wants to concentrate again on his role as youth manager at Hamburger SV.
