Tennis player Yelena Rybakina narrowly missed the “Sunshine Double”. After winning the tournament two weeks ago in Indian Wells, the 22-year-old Kazakh lost 6:7 (14:16), 2:6 to the Czech Petra Kvitova in the final of the WTA tournament in Miami.
Wimbledon champion Rybakina wanted to become the fifth player in history to win back-to-back major hard court tournaments in Indian Wells and Miami. So far, only the German tennis icon Steffi Graf (1994, 1996), the Belgian Kim Clijsters (2005), the Belarusian Viktoria Asarenka and the Polish Iga Swiatek (2022) have succeeded.
In the men’s final on Sunday, the Italian Jannik Sinner and the Russian Daniil Medvedev will meet. In a gripping semi-final, Sinner defeated world number one Carlos Alcaraz from Spain in three sets.
Since Alcaraz is now unable to defend his title in Miami, the 19-year-old loses the lead in the world rankings to Serbian Novak Djokovic after the tournament. Medvedev secured the final ticket by beating compatriot Karen Khachanov in the semi-finals.
