WhatsApp offers various formatting options to emphasize individual words or entire text passages. TECHBOOK reveals how to write in bold, italics or strikethrough on WhatsApp.
Sometimes you just want to emphasize a point in your messages. WhatsApp also offers various options apart from emojis, but not everyone is familiar with them. You can easily write in different styles on Messenger. Certain passages or words in WhatsApp can stand out from the mass of words by typing them fat, italic or crossed out to write. With this formatting, important information is guaranteed not to be lost. What works on the computer also works on Messenger.
Since there is no extra button for the feature on WhatsApp, punctuation marks are used for this. Our short guide shows how to easily format texts on WhatsApp (for iOS and Android). This is guaranteed to impress your chat partner.

Write in bold on WhatsApp
If you want to bold a word or a section of text on WhatsApp, put an asterisk at the beginning and end. The formatting is not yet visible in your own text field. Only when you send the text will the selected area be displayed in bold to the chat partner. We think: Really fat!
Write in italics
You can not only write in bold on WhatsApp, but also in italics. For the italic font, put an underscore before and after the appropriate text passage. The “Underline” command formats the text in italics.
Write crossed out
Writing in bold and italics on WhatsApp is especially helpful when you want to emphasize something. Crossing out words or passages of text is especially useful if you have discovered an error while reading a message that has already been sent. You can then easily fix this with the strikethrough function. The word or sentence is written in the middle of tildes (also called approximate signs or wavy lines).
Important to note: No spaces are placed after or before the respective special character! This applies to both when you write strikethrough and italics and when you write in bold on WhatsApp.
What is “monospace” formatting?
To add a word or a passage of text in monospace
To format, simply write three grave accents before and after the word or text passage.
If you can’t find or use the punctuation marks on the keyboard, you can still write in bold, italics, strikethrough or monospace on WhatsApp. To do this, use the context menu on both Android and iPhone.
- Android: Tap and hold the typed text you want to format. Now select “Bold, Italic or More”. Tap More to choose Strikethrough or Monospace.
- iPhone: Tap the text you entered in the text field and choose Select or Select All > B_I_U. Then choose Bold, Italic, Strikethrough, or Monospace.
