Joy at the German Wrestling Association at the World Championships in Belgrade: Thanks to Anastasia Blayvas, the German team is now appearing in the medal table. The freestyle wrestler from KFC Leipzig took bronze in her weight class.
Wrestler Anastasia Blayvas surprisingly won bronze at the World Championships in Belgrade and secured the German team their first medal. The Leipzig woman defeated the Indian Neha Sharma in the small final of the weight class up to 55 kg in the Serbian capital on Tuesday evening (September 19th, 2023) and thus celebrated the greatest success of her career.
A little later, Elena Brugger (Adelhausen) missed a second medal for the DRB selection in the bronze fight in the weight class up to 59 kg. Brugger, who won bronze in the category up to 57 kg at the European Championships in April, had to admit defeat to Dane Othelie Annette Höie in the small final. However, the South Baden resident was still very satisfied with fifth place.
For the Olympics in a different weight class
The only downside: At the Summer Olympics in Paris next year, the classes up to 55 and 59 kg are not part of the program – instead of ten categories at the World Cup, there are only six decisions. For Blayvas and Brugger the classes up to 53 and 57 kg would then be considered.
Freestyle men initially without an Olympic ticket
The German freestyle men missed out on the coveted Olympic tickets at the World Wrestling Championships in Belgrade. After a good tournament up to that point, Erik Thiele was unfortunately eliminated on Tuesday in the hope round of the weight class up to 97 kilograms. The third place in the European Championship in 2016 lost 1:3 to the Turk Ibrahim Ciftci, his last attack for the supposed victory came too late and was therefore no longer counted. Thiele’s teammates had all failed before.
Whoever makes it into the top 5 in one of the Olympic classes at the title fights in the Serbian capital will secure their country a quota place for the 2024 Games in Paris. The German freestyle team must now hope to be able to get Olympic tickets at one of the qualifying tournaments next spring.
