Wrestling: Brugger gets EM bronze – Schell and Niemesch in the final – wrestling

Elena Brugger won the small final in the class up to 59 kg on Thursday evening (March 31, 2022) and secured bronze. The 24-year-old defeated Alyona Kolesnik from Azerbaijan, against whom she had lost the day before, 9-0.

In addition, Anna Schell and Luisa Niemesch made it into the final and will fight for gold on Friday.

Schell and Niemesch with gold chances

For Niemesch it is the biggest success of her career. In the final of the weight class up to 62 kilograms, the 26-year-old from the North Baden club SV Germania Weingarten will now face Bulgarian Taybe Yusein.

Schell already won European Championship silver in 2019 and came third in the World Championships twice. The 28-year-old from Bavarian SC Isaria Unterföhring will fight in the final of the class up to 72 kilograms against Buse Cavusoglu Tosun from Turkey.

Freestyle men without a medal

Previously, the EM in the Hungarian capital had been rather disappointing from a German perspective. Although the sometimes highly decorated athletes from Russia, Belarus and Ukraine were missing as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the freestyle men of the German Ringer Federation (DRB) remained without a medal.

From Friday the Greco-Roman wrestlers will hit the mat.
