WOW: Sky streaming service cost and content

In August 2016, Sky-Ticket was launched as a flexible streaming service without a long-term subscription. Now, almost six years later, Sky heralds the end of the service. WOW now takes its place.

With the motto “Streaming has never been so WOW”, Sky announces the start of its new online service. The offer replaces Sky Ticket with immediate effect and brings some changes for customers – both in price and in use.

Sky Ticket becomes WOW

The most important thing first: Existing customers don’t have to do anything to continue to be able to use Sky’s offer. As the provider reports, the switch from Sky Ticket to WOW is automatic. The previously valid accounts and access data will remain in place. The renaming and visual adjustment will be rolled out automatically via update. However, Sky emphasizes that it may take a few days for the new brand image to reach all users and areas.

Sarah Jennings, Senior Vice President WOW at Sky Germany, is optimistic. “With WOW we are bringing an exciting new brand to the German market that combines WOW content with brilliant simplicity. No other streaming service can offer such a comprehensive range of content, from the latest series to blockbuster movies and live sports. It’s true – streaming has never felt so WOW.”

With the new branding, Sky is also changing the user interface. WOW then offers, for example, extended personalization options and a revised account area. In the future, subscribers will be able to view their contract under “My Account” and make changes if they so wish. In addition, Sky users should be able to find WOW content even more easily thanks to a revised search function. For example, you can now search for actors, acronyms like GoT for “Game of Thrones” or sports clips.

Same content focus

In terms of content, however, little will change with the changeover. The provider continues to focus on series from HBO and Peacock, among others, new blockbusters, Sky originals and sports. There is also a pure series subscription called WOW series (formerly Sky Entertainment), a combination of series and films called WOW films & series (formerly Entertainment + Cinema) and WOW Live Sport (formerly Supersport). The latter includes, among other things, all Bundesliga games on Saturday, all games in the 2nd Bundesliga, the DFB Cup and the Premier League. But some sports are also covered apart from football. For example, Sky broadcasts all Formula 1 races, all games of the Liqui Moli Handball Bundesliga, US sports from the NHL and world-class tennis such as the legendary Wimbledon tournament and the entire ATP Tour.

As with Sky Ticket, WOW can be streamed on up to two devices at the same time. Users only need an Internet-enabled device such as a smartphone or tablet, a television or a games console. The WOW app is available on all devices on which Sky Ticket was already running. It is not necessary to reinstall the app, as Sky Ticket is automatically converted to WOW and all changes and adjustments made during the update are installed.

Promotional prices at the start of WOW, but not for existing customers

At the start of WOW, Sky is offering the packages WOW series and series & films at a special price. The reduced price is valid for bookings from June 13th to July 31st and is granted until users cancel their subscription. For the series package, Sky charges 7.99 euros instead of 9.99 euros during the campaign period. If you want to book the package of series and films, you pay 9.98 euros instead of the usual 14.98 euros. The term for both offers is one month.

What is unpleasant is that only new customers benefit from the offer. So far, the provider has not given us an answer to our question as to whether existing customers will also be able to enjoy the lower prices after switching to WOW.

Sports fans pay EUR 29.99 per month for WOW Live Sports. Alternatively, you can opt for an annual subscription, which reduces the price to EUR 24.99 per month. The same prices already applied to Sky Ticket Supersport – so nothing has changed here with the switch to WOW.
